I discovered rugby as a photographer, on weekends when the newspapers sent me pitchside, and it took hold of me completely: more than a hundred matches. As a cycling and motorsport photographer I look for effort, gesture, the moment in the corner. Teams always ask for the same thing: photos different from the usual ones.
I started photographing rugby in 2010. I followed all of Rovigo's home matches at the Stadio Battaglini and, when Rovigo played away, those of Petrarca or Calvisano. Magners League, RaboDirect Pro12, Guinness Pro12 and Pro14, the Six Nations in 2013, national team matches: about a hundred photos per match, often more.
Padova, Parma, Viadana, Mogliano, Calvisano, the Zebre and Benetton Treviso; Scotland-Italy in Edinburgh in 2011 and the Wasps in Rovigo in 2012, in the Heineken Cup. In front of my lens have passed Glasgow, Connacht, the All Blacks, England, Scotland, Wales, France, Australia, South Africa, Tonga, Fiji, Perpignan and Bayonne.
The 2011 Junior World Championship was played in Veneto. The final, on 26 June at the Stadio Plebiscito in Padova, was won by New Zealand 33-22 over England; among the New Zealanders was Beauden Barrett.
I photographed one match on film: 36 shots in all, no bursts. In one of them, Rovigo hooker Luke Mahoney, running, lifts the opponent who was trying to tackle him.
The photo I care about most is a pan with only the player's face in focus, a moment before the tackle.
Giro d'Italia 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2024; Giro del Veneto 2025 and 2026; the 2h di Custoza for the participants and the Benetti team; cross country races. Athletes' safety comes first; then I position myself where I can catch an effort or a gesture, with rule-of-thirds framing, patterns and panning. Among the photos I care about most: Del Toro, Pogačar with the fan and the white jersey of Lidl-Trek, and Nibali in the Verona time trial of the 2022 Giro d'Italia.
WSBK Italian rounds, working alongside another photographer; the Due Valli and Valpantena rallies, a historic re-enactment. I use long exposures to convey movement, but I can also freeze the action; in the rain, waterproofs that leave me free to move.
They are two different photos. A bike leaning into a corner shows the sponsor; a photographed race shows the bike on that circuit, in that corner, at that moment.
The price depends on duration, distance, delivery times and requests, and I adapt to each client's needs. With championship or race, date and place, I prepare the quote.
Since 2020 I have shot the Magut Race for Heidelberg Materials, formerly Italcementi: they chose me to cover the race because I have a strong sports background and know how to put events in context. The first editions were run in Songavazzo (BG), then all in Selvino (BG), on the Paola Magoni track on Monte Purito.

At every break I go to the press room and download. The pace depends on the schedule of practice and races.
